1. Avoid Platform Exhaustion

This is the first thing I tell all of my clients when we sit down for a consultation: you do NOT need to be on every platform. I firmly believe that you only need to be on three platforms MAX. When you try to handle any more than that, it creates what I like to call “Platform Exhaustion” – you are not maximizing your potential on the platforms you’re actually good at (and like) because you’re stretching yourself thin trying to create content for too many things. Pick three (or less) platforms that you love spending time on and focus. I actually had this conversation with PoshONPennies founder, Ungenita Prevost, the other day: she vented to me about how much she dislikes Facebook Pages and no matter what strategy we come up with for her Content Calendar, it just doesn’t feel right, but she felt like she needed content there because this Page exists with her name and brand attached. I straight up told her to get off Facebook Pages then! She does SO well on Twitter and Instagram, there is no need to strain her brain by trying to figure out why Facebook Pages weren’t feeling good. So I made her this banner


so that if fans stumble across her Facebook Page, they know where to find her! This way, she is producing quality content in places she would be anyway and social media doesn’t seem so much like “work.” We often forget the “social” part of “social media” — this is supposed to be fun, y’all!

2. All Platforms Are Not Created Equal

When you choose your Platforms, choose wisely. There are rules for posting on each platform to ensure success and you want to be sure you’re up for the challenge. For example: Tweet Impressions only last 14 minutes and have a 140 character limit. Because of this, Twitter lends itself to short bursts of stream of consciousness and doesn’t have to be perfectly curated. If you’re a storyteller and want your content to last, you probably don’t want to be on Twitter: Facebook might be more your cup of tea. On the other hand, if you’re a visual storyteller looking to gain a wider audience, you might want to be on Instagram since it’s photo based and the easiest platform for discoverability! (Time will tell if discoverability will change with the new Instagram algorithm, but that’s a story for another day.)

3. Be Consistent

Be realistic about how often you think you can post per platform and *be consistent* with your plan. There is nothing worse than gaining a loyal audience and then becoming an Inconsistantista and not utilizing your voice. If you think you can only post once a day, think about concentrating on Instagram and make that one photo really good – people want to see your best photo on IG, not ALL of your photos. If you find yourself stuck to your phone, Twitter might be your comfort zone, you can tweet every hour on the hour and not annoy your fans since those tweet impressions don’t last very long. Think about using a platform like Hootsuite to schedule some posts ahead of time so you never go a day in silence.

4. Know {And Love} Your Audience

Spend some time engaging with your followers to see what they’re into. Like their posts, retweet them, comment on their best IG pics! The more you know about the people who like you, the more you can tailor your posts to their interests to ultimately boost engagement on YOUR posts! Be a #SupportiveBeauty — when people support others, incredible things happen. For Example, I recently realized that my audience likes seeing photos of me much more than photos of my food or surroundings, so I’m working on upping my selfie game. I always try to get my surroundings or other friends in my photos, though, so my whole Instagram Account doesn’t look the same. There’s a difference between curating a look and being vain and boring!

5. Be Authentic
On the other hand, if you aren’t a Selfie person, don’t force yourself to take them. The point of social media is to create content in order to draw in an audience and let them know who you truly are. Instead of filling your feed with stuff you don’t care about, or feel like you  have  to post because it’s trending, post about what interests you. This will attract the right audience for you, even if it’s smaller than anticipated. Quality is  always  more important than quantity, y’all.
